Do you smoke a cigarette or does a cigarette smoke you?

Don't think of a pink elephant!

Have you ever tried not to think about something? For example, don't think about pink elephants. The moment you try to follow this request, your mind first creates an image of a pink elephant in order to understand what it is supposed to avoid. This is a classic example of the paradoxical effect - consciously trying to suppress a thought often leads to thinking about that thought even more.

Why are bans ineffective?

A similar mechanism works when it comes to quitting bad habits. When someone says to themselves, “I’m not going to smoke anymore,” their mind must first conjure up the image of smoking, the very thing they want to avoid. Instead of diverting their thoughts away, such a ban only reinforces them. This is why New Year’s and other resolutions to quit smoking are often ineffective—focusing on “not smoking” actually keeps their minds on cigarettes.

The power of positive affirmations

A more effective approach is to replace the prohibition with positive messages. Instead of “I will not smoke anymore,” you can say to yourself: “I am becoming healthier and breathing with full lungs.” Positive affirmations help neutralize the paradoxical effect and direct thoughts towards desired goals. However, the challenge remains – how to reach the unconscious mind?

What is the unconscious mind?

The unconscious mind contains all of your memories, experiences, and thoughts, even those you don't even know you have. This is the part of your mind that controls your heart rate, breathing, and many other automatic processes. Without conscious thought, you know when to inhale and exhale. This part of your mind doesn't communicate with words, but rather thinks in images, emotions, and actions.

Communication with the unconscious mind

Imagine a driver who gets a reward every time he runs a red light. He may hear it a thousand times that it is dangerous, but his unconscious mind will associate the reward with a beneficial behavior. A similar mechanism works with smoking – if you smoke when you are stressed, you are rewarding the stress because it gives you a rush of dopamine. This means that emotions, images and actions are much more powerful than words.

Old sayings like “a picture is worth a thousand words” and “actions speak louder than words” confirm that our subconscious mind receives information better through visual and emotional stimuli than through verbal commands. Therefore, it is crucial to learn to communicate with your unconscious mind in a way that will support your desired changes.
