Why habits are not a matter of will
Diets work. Apps work. Rules work. Until you give in – and then you're right back where you were.
Most people think it's a lack of willpower. But willpower has nothing to do with it. Your body has a system called homeostasis. Its sole purpose is to keep everything the way it is – temperature, hormones, heart rate… and even your habits. When you change a habit from the outside – with a diet, an app, a rule – the body perceives this as a threat to balance. And it fights back.
That's why any change you force from the outside only lasts as long as you have the energy to fight. When you give in, your body pulls you back. Not because you're weak – but because you're fighting a system that's millions of years older than your conscious will.
