If we want to stop something, we need to control it, right?<br>In practice, however, the opposite happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Example: pink elephant<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Try saying to yourself for a moment:<br><strong>\u201cDon\u2019t think of a pink elephant.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What happens?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people first clearly imagine a pink elephant \u2013 only then do they try to \u201cremove\u201d it from their minds.<br>This reveals an important feature of brain function:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the brain has difficulty processing negation,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>first they create an image,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>only then do they try to turn it off.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How does this affect bad habits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The same mechanism works with smoking, overeating, or other behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When we say to ourselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI am not allowed to smoke\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI can&#039;t eat sweets\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>the brain first activates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the image of a cigarette,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the taste of sweet food,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the feeling of satisfaction associated with this behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Result: increased attention \u2192 increased desire<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The process goes like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Attempting control<\/strong> (\u201cI must not\u201d)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased attention to behavior<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Activation of desire<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Pulse reinforcement<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>More attention means more internal activation.<br>And the greater the desire, the greater the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">When a thought becomes an obsession<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, this process can lead to a condition where:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>the brain thinks more and more about the forbidden thing,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>thoughts become intrusive,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the focus narrows almost exclusively to the object of desire.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>cigarettes,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>chips,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>cake.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a lack of willpower \u2013 it is a result of the way attention and thought processes work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why the solution is no longer in control<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Because the problem is created by control, it cannot be solved by more control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Additional control attempts:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>increase internal pressure,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increase mental load,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>they further strengthen the focus on unwanted behavior.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Therefore, a different approach is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Solution: Conscious observation instead of prohibition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead of saying to ourselves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI can&#039;t do this\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI can&#039;t, I can&#039;t, I can&#039;t\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>let&#039;s use a different response:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Observation without immediate reaction.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThe desire for a cigarette appears.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI feel a craving for sweets.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key step: create space between impulse and response<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When a desire arises:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>yes <strong>we notice<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>let&#039;s wait a few seconds<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>with this <strong>slow down the automatic response<\/strong>,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>we include in the process <strong>conscious decision-making<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>At this point, we can still do the same thing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>let&#039;s light a cigarette,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>We eat chips.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>But the difference is key:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>the action is no longer automatic \u2013 it becomes conscious.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Why this approach works<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Several important changes occur through this process:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>reduce automaticity of behavior,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>reduce the trigger strength,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>increase psychological flexibility,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>let&#039;s create space for different choices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Over time, the trigger starts to lose its power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\"\/>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The role of consciousness and subconsciousness<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This approach works on two levels:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Conscious level<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>observing desire,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>interruption of automatism,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a conscious decision.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2.
